How Much Does Wallpaper Mural Cost? A Complete Price Guide

Understand wallpaper mural pricing by square foot, material, wall size, shipping, samples, installation, and custom design work before you order.

Article focus: pricing and measurement

The cost and measurement decision

Start with accurate wall measurements; the final custom mural price depends on area, material and any finishing options.

There is no single fixed price for a made-to-measure wallpaper mural. Its product amount is the ordered print area in square feet multiplied by the product's base rate plus the selected material's relative rate. Delivery, applicable tax, wall preparation and professional fitting may add to the project total. The examples below use hypothetical rates, not a current Solowalls quote; use the configured product page and checkout for the real amount.

Start with the dimensions you will order

Measure the wall's width and height, then follow the retailer's trim instruction. Solowalls asks buyers to add about 4 inches (10 centimetres) to both width and height. That means a wall measured at 120 by 96 inches would be ordered at about 124 by 100 inches. The printed order area would be 124 × 100 ÷ 144, or about 86.11 square feet. The physical wall area is only 80 square feet; the difference is installation allowance, not an extra feature wall.

Use the order dimensions consistently when comparing materials and checkout totals. Do not multiply the physical area by a price in one quote and the print area by a price in another. Suppliers may add trim differently; Graham & Brown, for example, describes an automatic allowance for its own bespoke murals. Follow the instructions of the shop you are purchasing from rather than adding every manufacturer's allowance together.

Do not subtract a doorway or window from the rectangle on your own. A scene may need to be printed continuously across that area so its remaining parts align on either side, and the product tool may price the full ordered width and height. If the wall has a large opening or an unusual shape, send its measurements and position to the seller and ask how the image and quote will be handled. Subtracting empty wall area from a calculator without changing the print layout produces a misleading comparison.

Understand the rate and material choice

The basic arithmetic is ordered square feet multiplied by the selected per-square-foot rate. The website's wall tool updates the product amount after dimensions and material are selected. For example, if a hypothetical rate were $3.00 per square foot, the exact area of 124 × 100 ÷ 144 square feet would produce about $258.33 before any separate delivery or tax. This is an illustration, not a current Solowalls quote. Use the live product page and checkout for the current amount.

A material option can change the effective rate. On this site, the price calculation adds a material option's relative charge to the product's base rate before multiplying by area. That means a small per-square-foot difference grows with a large wall. Compare the finished total for each offered finish, not just the displayed base rate. Check the option names and terms at checkout because the actual order determines what you receive.

For the same hypothetical wall, suppose one finish adds $0.20 per square foot to that illustrative $3.00 rate. The effective rate becomes $3.20, and the exact calculated area would cost about $275.56 before separate charges—roughly $17.22 more than the base example. This is arithmetic, not an advertised price or a statement about a particular current finish. Re-run the wall tool after changing the material so the displayed amount reflects the option you intend to buy.

Do not infer performance from price. A dearer finish is not automatically waterproof, easier to remove or better for every wall. The Wallcoverings Association describes washability, abrasion resistance and removability as distinct characteristics that must be checked for the specific wallcovering. Choose the material for the room and installation method first, then compare its cost.

Include more than the printed mural

Delivery may depend on destination, order value and service choice. Tax or import charges may also depend on the address and checkout terms. Read the cart total and delivery policy before assuming the displayed product amount is all you will pay. Samples, proofs or design changes may have separate rules; ask the supplier if they are not clearly shown.

Installation is another possible cost. A straightforward wall in good condition may be a DIY project for a confident installer following the exact product instructions. A high stairwell, sloped ceiling, numerous outlets or poor substrate may require professional labour and preparation. Request a written local installation quote for the actual wall and material; do not apply a generic labour rate from another region.

Wall preparation is not optional simply because it is less visible than the art. Loose paint, rough repairs or dampness may need to be fixed before installation. The Wallcoverings Association calls for a clean, dry and sound wall. Paying for a mural before resolving a water problem can make the entire project more expensive if the covering must be removed for repairs.

Separate confirmed charges from estimates. The print and delivery amounts may be visible in checkout, but wall repair, removal of old coverings and professional fitting usually require assessment of the actual room. Put those on distinct lines in your budget rather than hiding them inside a rounded “mural cost”. If a quote excludes one of them, it is incomplete for planning the whole project even though the product price itself may be accurate.

Follow one configuration through to checkout

The price beside a design thumbnail is not necessarily the price for your wall. Enter the actual order dimensions, select the exact material and set the crop you intend to print. Note the currency and the product amount at that point. If you change the size or finish, check the recalculated total. Moving only the crop does not change an area-based price, but save a new preview: an earlier screenshot no longer documents the artwork placement you are buying.

Carry that same configuration into the cart. Check that the order still shows the chosen dimensions, material, quantity and artwork before you compare amounts. A surcharge tied to material and area should already be reflected in the configured product price; do not add it a second time by hand. If the cart amount does not agree with the product-tool total for the same inputs, pause and ask the seller to explain the difference before paying.

Next inspect the checkout lines that were not in the wall-tool amount. Delivery can depend on the destination and chosen service. Taxes or import charges may be displayed at checkout, included in a quoted delivered price, or governed by separate destination terms. Do not assume an absent line means a charge can never apply. Confirm the total and the delivery policy for your address, then save the final order summary rather than only the first product-page view.

Know which costs checkout cannot settle

Artwork work may also sit outside the standard configured product. Uploading a finished image, asking someone to extend a background and commissioning an original scene are not necessarily the same service. If you need proofing, recolouring or file preparation, ask whether that work is offered and how it is quoted before approving a print. An automatic crop preview does not, by itself, include a designer's revision round.

For the 124-by-100-inch example, keep three figures distinct: the 86.11-square-foot print area used in the illustrative arithmetic, the current configured product amount shown by the site for your chosen finish, and the full amount payable after address-specific charges are known. Then add any separately quoted wall preparation and fitting to reach the real project cost.
